          Analysis of China's power generation in 2018

          From January to April of 2018, thermal power generation reached 1595.1 billion kwh, up 7.1% year-on-year, and the growth rate decreased by 0.1% compared with the same period of last year. Water, nuclear, wind and solar power generation accounted for 23.6% of the total, an increase of 0.5 percentage points over the same period last year. Among them, wind power generation increased by 35.5%, with a strong growth; nuclear power increased by 10.2%, which slowed down compared with the average level in recent years due to no new grid connected generating units in the near future; due to the less than expected inflow of water, hydropower only increased by 1.4% year on year.

          Wind power generation rate and wind power curtailment are significantly increased. From January to April in 2018, 5.34 million kilowatts of wind power were added to the grid. By the end of April 2018, a total of 168.46 million kilowatts of wind power will be connected nationwide. Wind power generation was 135.1 billion kwh, up 35.5% year on year. The average utilization hours of wind power are 812 hours, 149 hours more than that of the same period last year (663 hours). In the first quarter of 2018, the national wind power curtailment was 9.1 billion kwh, a year-on-year decrease of 4.4 billion kwh; the national average wind curtailment rate was 8.5%, a year-on-year decrease of 8 percentage points. The wind power and wind abandonment rate of the whole country decreased. The significant improvement of wind curtailment and power rationing is related to many factors. On the one hand, the macro-economy is stable and good, and the power consumption of the whole society continues to increase; on the other hand, the operation of UHV transmission channel improves the wind power consumption capacity, and the average utilization hours of wind power are steadily increased. In addition, the National Energy Administration (NEA) has set the air volume and wind curtailment rate to drop in 2018, which is conducive to the continuous improvement of wind curtailment and power rationing.
